August, 2011 – Dennis of RainCatcher Uganda teams up with Peace Corps Volunteer, Brian Kobick to restore a dead well and bring clean-water filter systems to schools in Kacumbala village in eastern Uganda . . . cost = $100.
Starfish & Pistol
The ongoing contributions of many friends and colleagues are making a huge difference in many lands, including: Haiti, Pakistan, Kenya, Uganda, India, Indonesia, Sumatra, Chile.

Here’s a well known fable – a story I use to describe our work:
‘It’s extreme low tide and tens of thousands of starfish are stranded on the beach. An eight year old girl is picking them up one at a time and tossing them back into the ocean. A jogger has stopped far down the beach and is carefully observing all this. Eventually he walks up to the girl and says with authority, “This is a noble effort little girl, but (pointing up and down the beach to thousands of dying starfish) it isn’t going to make a difference”. In silence the girl bends down, picks up a starfish, and throws it into the water, then replies, “It made a difference to that one”.
Here’s another way I describe our work: In the remote regions of the world where we bring our clean-water systems, the practice of fetching drinking water from traditional sources is akin to playing Russian Roulette (A bullet is placed in one of six chambers – the pistol is pointed at your own head – you pull the trigger and hope it isn’t your turn to die). When we go into an area and distribute simple bucket filters we are effectively removing that bullet from the gun. It makes sense that kids around the world shouldn’t have to play Russian Roulette every time they take a drink of water.

Reach the Un-Reached

July – Uganda – Over a two week period, everyday we meet with local humanitarian organizations. After training, RainCatcher gives water filters to each – and they do the rest – bringing our clean-water systems to countless schools, orphanages, churches & clinics.
Keep in mind that our NGO partners like Reach The Unreached and ROWAN are two samples of hundreds of similar projects made possible by the amazing partnerships between humanitarians in Uganda & Kenya, and their counterparts in California. Based on the same sharing model that provided safe drinking water for us when we were growing up in America – RainCatcher is simply doing the same in parts of the world where this basic right for children has been overlooked.

While in the field we develop relationships with other humanitarian organizations. Supplies are left with Dennis – RainCatcher Uganda country director – so that after we return home, our work of bringing safe drinking water to remote villages continues.
Here’s just one example: Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) flew Dennis and water filters to several islands in the Sesse archipelago in Lake Victoria, including Bukasa Island. The families on these islands get their drinking water from the lake, which is polluted and extremely life threatening. Now, thanks to the partnership of RainCatcher and Mission Aviation Fellowship the people on these remote islands in the middle of Africa no longer have to risk serious illness and death from their drinking water.

Students in California made jewelry, and held bake sales, in order to meet the Ollie Challenge of providing enough funds to guarantee that Christine will be able to complete final five semesters and receive her high school diploma.

Our Kenya/Uganda Project is a joint effort between Water 4 Everyone, Beachbody & RainCatcher.
